PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT TECHNOLOGIST
Our client based 15 minutes from Sherborne is a rapidly expanding Somerset/Dorset based company, manufacturing fertiliser for the amenity and horticultural markets, currently supplying into 26+ countries. They produce granular, liquid and coated products and they have an immediate pressing need to improve the quality of the liquid products.
The job holder will lead this and be responsible for devising and implementing improvements to the process, working in conjunction with the shopfloor to ensure that output of conforming products can be maximised.
The company is continually working on the development of new granular as well and the job holder will be expected to play an integral part of this process. Other roles may well be investigations into the potential manufacturing soluble fertilisers and possibly technical support to the further development of coated products.
It is anticipated that the first six months will be spent working and resolving issues within liquid production and then picking up other roles while having a continuing overseeing role on liquid production.
A key output will be the continuing development of the liquid plant ensuring volumes and quality of products within the agreed budget and timescales, ensuring that workflows and processes are optimised.
This is an exciting new role that would suit an ambitious graduate who is a self-starter and who is commercially orientated so that they can drive positive changes to our liquids manufacturing capability and ensuring that the processes are both workable and integrated into our clients existing systems and controls within agreed timeframes.
It is expected that the job holder will put forward suggestions to optimise manage the design of layouts, storage requirements and all aspects of control/integration and operation of the liquids department, where necessary.
The job holder will ensure that all Health and Safety requirements are met. It is also essential that systems development is done in line with all necessary industry and/or environmental standards/legislation, such as ISO and FIAS.
The company is in the process of adopting lean manufacturing and the job holder will be expected to be guided by operations management to ensure that best practice continuous improvement lean practices will be implemented within liquids production.
As the UK leaves the EU, it may be necessary for us to test a whole range of products and create certificates of analysis. This work will, as required, also be an integral part of the job role.
This is a very hand on role and the job holder will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership and interpersonal skills. These are required as the role will involve working closely with the existing production and materials management team to ensure that there is always coherence and cohesion.
In addition, the client is in the process of developing training and education courses for our customers, in order to further extend our reputation of technical excellence. It is expected that the job holder will not only interface with customers on technical matters, where appropriate, but also develop and deliver training material both remotely and face to face in our new training centre.
The ability to be an effective communicator is vital as is the ability to plan and manage the necessary resources to implement the necessary improvements.
The job holder needs to be a competent problem solver and a "completer finisher" in nature and capable of dealing with the necessary details of operational matters. This will require the ability to self-manage in a structured way that maximises the benefit to the business.
