Job Description

SENCo

Job posted by: Jack Curtis

This independent SEN school is one of the oldest exclusively SEN schools in the UK, is looking to appoint a SENCo to start September 2021.

The school is an independent school of some 50 boys and girls, ages 9-19. The classes are very small, usually five-seven students in each; the teachers have extensive experience in helping SEN students achieve their maximum; they have their own coterie of fully qualified therapists, who work in concert with the teaching staff; they do not employ LSAs or supply teachers; the school is located in a charming Edwardian building convenient to all forms of public transportation in London-and perhaps most significantly, they are a happy school with both staff and students united in the importance of learning.

Almost all the students are supported by local authorities who are pleased that their students "always have an Outcome." In essence, this means that when students leave the school, they do so with qualifications and with definite destinations.

In the world of SEN education, they are unique in three fundamental ways: (1) the breadth of our programmes enable us to address the needs of a 9 year-old or a 19 year-old, thereby eliminating the anxiety that accompanies most SEN students when they have to move from one school to another; (2) we accept a range of learning challenges, including ASD, AD/HD, Dyslexia and others; (3) CAL is one of only two schools in the UK that, instead of A-Levels, uses the American High School Diploma (continual assessment instead of examination) to enable our students to go on to university. Over the last 20 years, we have never had a Diploma graduate fail to gain entry to university.

The successful candidate will be an effective communicator, will have an encouraging track record in Education, will hold the qualifications of a SENCo will have experience in both teaching and administration, will have sound inter-personal skills and will see Education as the noblest of callings.

This position could suit an experienced SENco, a deputy looking for a step up, or someone ready to take on their first SENco post.
